AMD Radeon Overlay
Radeon Overlay is an integrated feature of AMD Radeon Software designed to render an in-game user interface on top of a running game. It shows real-time performance data like FPS and GPU temps, and provides fast access to recording, streaming, and screenshot tools without leaving the game.
Using hooks in the DXGI and Vulkan rendering paths, Radeon Overlay draws its UI via the Radeon Software driver. It fetches counters from the GPU, coordinates with the streaming module, and honors user preferences for visibility, position, and hotkeys.
Radeon Overlay, when installed from the official AMD Radeon Software package, is a legitimate AMD component designed to enhance in-game telemetry and multimedia features. It runs in user mode, is digitally signed by AMD, and operates within the Radeon Software framework. In typical usage, it imposes minimal risk and does not modify core game binaries. If you obtain the software from AMD’s official site, keep your system security in check and avoid third-party builds that claim to replicate it.
Radeon Overlay is not a virus when downloaded from AMD’s official Radeon Software package. If you encounter a suspicious file, verify its origin, signature, and path, and scan with trusted security tools. Attackers sometimes imitate overlays, so confirm the digital signature and compare hashes against AMD’s published values before enabling or executing the file. When in doubt, reinstall from AMD’s official site.
Reasons it's running:
Radeon Overlay is an AMD feature that renders an in-game UI showing FPS, temps, clock speeds, and active widgets, with quick access to recording and streaming tools.
Open Radeon Software, go to the In-Game Overlay setting, and toggle it On or Off. You can also assign or change the hotkey to enable or disable the overlay.
Some minor overhead is expected, but AMD designs the overlay to minimize impact. If you notice drops, disable unused widgets or update drivers.
Outdated drivers, conflicts with other overlays, or anti-cheat restrictions can cause instability. Update Radeon Software and check for known game compatibility notes.
Overlay files live under C:\Program Files\AMD\CNext\Bin64 (RadeonOverlay64.exe). Verify signature and hash against AMD's official release notes.
Update Radeon Overlay by updating Radeon Software through the AMD intake app; latest overlay versions are included with driver updates.
