Box Sync Service
Box Sync Service is the Windows background component that powers Box Sync by monitoring selected local folders and coordinating file uploads and downloads with Box Cloud. It runs with minimal UI, starts at login, and keeps your Box-stored files in sync across devices without requiring user interaction.
The service manages the Box Sync Agent, detects folder changes via file-system watchers, queues operations, and communicates with Box over HTTPS to apply updates. It stores metadata locally and collaborates with the box-sync.exe UI for progress and conflict resolution.
box-sync-service.exe is a legitimate component of Box Sync, published by Box, Inc., and is commonly installed in Program Files. When installed from Box's official site or enterprise deployments, it runs with limited privileges to perform synchronization tasks. Keep the software updated, verify digital signatures, and maintain current antivirus protection to minimize risk from tampering or counterfeit installers.
While box-sync-service.exe is normally a legitimate Box product, malware can masquerade under the same filename. To confirm legitimacy, verify the executable is located in the Box install folder, check the digital signature from Box, compare the file hash against Box's published values, and run a current antivirus/EDR scan. If the path or signature is unexpected, investigate immediately.
Red Flags: Path outside the Box installation folder, unsigned or expired certificates, multiple copies of the binary in temporary locations, or suspicious parent processes.
Reasons it's running:
It is the background Windows service that powers Box Sync, keeping your local folders synchronized with Box Cloud. It is safe if installed from Box and signed.
Typically in C:\Program Files\Box\Box Sync\box-sync-service.exe; beware of spoofed locations if you did not install Box Sync.
Use services.msc to stop the Box Sync Service and set Startup Type to Disabled, or uninstall Box Sync if you no longer need synchronization.
During active synchronization or large transfers, the service will consume CPU and memory. This should subside after queues drain or with a version update.
Box Drive provides a newer method for cloud access, but Box Sync may still be used for legacy folder synchronization. Consider upgrading if recommended by Box support.
Check for Box updates via the Box application, run the installer to repair or update Box Sync, and ensure your OS has the latest patches.
